Childhood Speech, Language, and Listening Problems : What Every Parent Should Know by Patricia McAleer Hamaguchi

Gesture is a natural means of communication. In some children, gesture can help them get speaking started without having to focus so much on their mouths. They are frustrated already! So let's make it easy to get what you want by showing you, and you help them give an approximation to the word. " Do you want a cookie?, Look at me, Cookie?" Try not to give a directive. 2 year olds will often respond with the opposite. Make learning words fun and rewarding. If the child makes an attempt to gesture for cookie or eating and saying a few sounds, let him or her have it fast!
